HOW IS AN ORIGINAL PRINT MADE?
RELIEF (Wood cut/Linocut)
The surface of the printing block is cut away, inked,
and the paper pressed down onto the surface through
a press.
INTAGLIO (Etching/aquatint/engraving)
The artist incises lines in a metal or plastic plate
with a sharp point (engraving). With etching,
the artist incises an acid resistant wax coating before
dipping the plate into acid. The plate is then
inked and run through the press.
LITHOGRAPH The artist
draws on a flat smooth slab with a grease crayon or
liquid grease solution. The plate is then treated, so
that ink adheres to the grease, and the print is produced
on a lithographic press.
SCREENPRINT This
is a stencil process using fine mesh fabric on a frame.
The image is blocked out in sections on the screens
(one per colour), using paper, glue or film, and the
ink is forced through the open areas of mesh by a squeegee.

DIGITAL/GICLEE Images
created by the artist are scanned or downloaded and
digitally manipulated before being inkjet or laser printed
at high resolution onto archival paper. Giclees
are often editioned just like traditional original prints.
MONOPRINT A one of a kind
print produced by the artist drawing or painting directly
onto a plate which has repeatable incised areas. A
MONOTYPE is entirely unique and has no repeated
areas.
